Project Description

This bridge will replace the existing link, shown above, which forms part of the main highway between the cities of Baguio and Manila. The new bridge is 500m in length, and incorporates plan curvatures of as little as 130 metres radius. The bridge is supported on 12 piers, and is fixed at piers five and six. A typical "free" pier has two free sliding pot bearings and a central thrust bearing with number LUDs connected between the pier head and the bridge soffit. The LUD allows seismic forces to be shared between all the piers. This allows the designer to maintain a cost effective regular pier section throughout the structure and reduces foundation sizes.

The movement and thrust vectors are obviously complicated due to the curvatures of the structure and after a full analysis consultants designed an arrangement of LUDs and guide bearings to be installed at an angle to the primary axis of the bridge. CI worked closely in partnership with a bearing manufacturer to provide the client with closely co-ordinated LUD and thrust bearing solution.
